As we prepare to ring in the New Year, I’m “heading back to work”. I took a couple weeks off the end of December to reflect on the past year, and prepare for the new.

In my last blog I talked about how you can put money into your pocket from direct sales. We even broke down the cost of doing business, which included the purchasing of catalogs, office type supplies, fuel and the products themselves. The model we used was $100 in sales, with a 20% commission (or discount) on products, $10 for catalogs, $5 for office supplies and $5 for fuel. If you do the math it’s easy to see that the $100 in sales is completely used up for the cost of doing business. Now let’s figure out how you can actually put money in your pocket.The way to put actual money into your pocket is to sell more. Using the figures above, of you sell $200 you’ll actually pocket $20. Based on the fact that you already have the catalogs, office supplies, and chances are you can deliver a couple orders to the same place.Now, what would happen if you sold $300, you could potentially pocket $40. Although that doesn’t seem like a bunch of money, if you only spent 2 hours that becomes $20 an hour.As you can see, it’s really not about making easy money, it’s more about getting the large orders. If your only selling a small amount, then direct sales probably isn’t a way to pocket big money.Bottom line, if you want to make money, you have to put in the time. Just like any other sales job based on commissions, the more time you put in getting the sales, the more money you pocket.
How do you make money you can put into your pocket with direct sales?For so many of us we see the ads luring is in to direct sales. So you might be wondering what is direct sales. The The Work At Home Woman blog defines direct sales as…… the process of selling products face-to-face away from a retail store location. Many times this is done through in-home shopping parties, presentations, and catalog sales. For a minimal fee, companies give you a starter kit that includes everything that you need to start your own business.But how do you make money? This is still the biggest question. And the answer diggers for each company. The company I belong to offers a basic 20% discount on products. Of course the percentage increases as the order size increases. Up to a 55% discount… But that really doesn’t answer the basic question.. how can I put money in my pocket?Essentially all direct sales companies operate the same way. You gather orders from your customers, you order products from the company at a discount, and the difference is what you put in your pocket. Sounds pretty simple right? This basic math model computes that if you “sell” $100 to your customers, you pay $80 to your company, you put $20 on your pocket. Although it’s not quite that simple, that is the basics.The problem with that basic math is it doesn’t take into account the cost of doing business. Even though you don’t have rent, utilities, or inventory with direct sales, there is still a cost of doing business. To be successful in direct sales you will need to have a catalog for customers to look at, you have the cost of gathering orders, (pen, order forms, printing) and usually you cover the costs of getting product to your customers.So using our basic math model, the $20 that you pocket isn’t really pocketed. If your catalogs cost $1 each and you have 10 catalogs, you spent $10 on them. You need to purchase items to gather the orders, I’m guessing those items probably cost you about $5. And Finally You need to get the products to the customers so you probably spent about $5 on fuel.As you can see, using the basic $100 in sales model. You paid $80 for the products, $10 for the Catalogs, $5 for supplies to gather the orders, and $5 in fuel to get the product to your customers. So, You actually didn’t put any money into your pocket. So what is the big appeal for direct sales? You can put real money into your pocket, and lots of it, but you also have to put in the work. It’s not a get rich quick endeavor as many would have you believe.If you approach direct sales as you do any other job, and work 40+ hours a week, yes you can put money into your pocket. It’s basically up to you and how hard you are willing to work.
As the holidays quickly approach, do you find yourself looking for some extra cash to cover all your generous gift giving. Have you thought about finding a way that you could make some extra cash, without getting another 9-5 job? Do you enjoy scrolling through social media, and finding that perfect deal?Do you love helping others?If so, direct sales is probably calling your name. But not all direct sales companies are the same. Many companies have large start up fees. Some have monthly sales requirements. Add many charge a monthly fee for hosting your personal website.Before you join a direct sales company check out what benefits are available, but more importantly what the cost to you will be. If a direct sales company charges you a monthly fee of $35 to host your personal website, and you earn a 35% commission from your sales. The math computes that you would need to sell $100 each month just to pay for your website. If you are serious about selling from a direct sales company, then $100 is not that far off a reach. The next question you need to ask yourself is how much time am I willing to devote to my direct sales endeavors. For an easy math computation let’s use $10/hour as a basis. Keeping that in mind to reach $100 you would need to spend 10 hours a month working your direct sales, just to pay for your personal website. When you crunch the numbers, not all direct sales companies are the same. If you are looking to make some extra spending cash for the holiday season, first determine how many hours you are willing to devote.

So how do you get to the virtual sales meetings in Avon U (the online training and development offered free of charge to Avon Representative).
First log in to your representative account at Avon Now. In the top left hand corner is three small lines, click those lines to open a menu.
When the menu opens, you see Avon U right under your name. Click Avon U and another page will open bringing you to the training and development center.
Once again you’ll see the three lines in the top left corner to open the menu. Click on them to open the menu. Then scroll down to the Resource Library, click to open the folders section, and one again scroll to the bottom where you’ll find the Virtual Sales Meeting.
Make sure you double click to open the link to the latest meeting. You can choose if you want to see the meeting in English or Spanish. Then double click to open the Webinar Recordings for VSM (Virtual Sales Meeting). Choose which meeting you want to see, and complete the registration form.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve tried almost everything. From the tips found on Avon Social , to following top sellers in our company, to trying to do it the old fashioned way. But the biggest thing I found was that although each and every time I watched a video on YouTube, tried to implement what others had done, or even have someone a brochure, it didn’t always feel like me.
With so many different ways to share Avon with friends, family and even strangers, it’s actually quite easy to find what works for you. Although it took me a while to build up the nerve to share the Avon Brochure with customers, I am so glad I finally did. And if you are an Avon representative, I bet you’ll be glad you did too.
Now you might be thinking it’s too complicated to share my brochure to Facebook, or in an email, or even as a message to my sister. Maybe this will help. If you have watched or read any of my past videos or posts you probably already have seen how easy it is to copy and paste a URL address. Now I know there’s many different programs, or apps, that can be used, I learned the old fashion way.
It’s really a matter of 3 simple steps
1) go to your own e-store in your browser NOT from an app ( if you don’t have your e-store set up, go to the Avon Representative page and set it up)
2) from the drop down menu go to shop the books
3) once you get to the web page that shows you the Current Brochure, copy the URL Address. You are then able to paste this “copied” link almost anywhere.
Do you have a Facebook page – paste it there. Do you have email addresses – paste it to an email. Do you text friends or family members – paste it there. Do you connect with others using messenger – paste it in a message. There is very few places in modern technology that you won’t be able to paste your brochure.
Just remember to be ethical, and considerate when you share your brochure with others. Don’t be that pesky cousin, sister, friend, co-worker or stranger who alienates everyone. Use your own judgement, after all you know yourself best. If it doesn’t seem right, then it probably isn’t.
